For the call SC1-BHC-11-2020, we will mobilize our skills in microfluidic instrumentation and fluid handling to help you to develop an organ-on-chip platform to assess the safety of chemicals. In particular, we can:

  • Provide a solution for the perfusion of your organ-on-chip device
  • Optimize of the flow inside your organ on chip (thanks to programed sequences, use of valves, etc)
  • Propose a user-friendly organ-on-chip platform, to simplify the use of microfluidics as much as possible and make the technology accessible to non-specialists

What organs-on-chip can do for animal-free chemicals safety assessment

The use of organ-on-chip for the animal-free safety assessment of chemicals in the frame of a collaboration with an industrial partner is perfectly aligned with the expected impacts of the call SC1-BHC-11-2020:

  • Scientifically sound, practicably implementable non-animal solutions readily deployable to aid in meaningful safety assessment of chemicals.

⇒ Organs-on-chip aim to recreate an organ, or part of an organ, at the microscale. The effect of chemicals on health can be studied in these model organs, which can even be connected together.

  • Uptake and commercial exploitation of the developed safety assessment approaches, products and services.

⇒ Our focus will be the development of user-friendly and easy-to-use tools for organ-on-chip technology, with the clear objective of the democratization of this technique for new molecules evaluation. As an industrial partner, we are experienced in the development of innovative products, aligned with the expectations of the end users, and we will help you to design a tool that we be suitable for commercialization.

    • Contribution to the Three Rs (3Rs) principles (‘Replacement’, ‘Reduction’, ‘Refinement’), with a particular emphasis on the ‘Replacement’ opportunities.

    ⇒ Organs-on-chip allow to model the natural body barriers, in a much more physiologically relevant way than conventional cell culture (possibility to induce shear stress on cells, to control very precisely the microenvironment of the cells, etc.).
