    What microfluidics can do for the development of innovative zero-pollution solutions?

    Microfluidics is of great help to detect and analyze compounds at low concentration outside the laboratory, as well as to evaluate the toxicity of chemicals on human health and ecosystems. The use of lab-on-chip, organ-on-chip, or soil-on-chip systems in your project will allow you to meet the objectives of the call LC-GD-8-1-2020 in an innovative manner:

    • Development of new cost-effective high-resolution methods to analyse and model the presence of persistent and mobile chemicals in products/materials and in different media;

    ⇒ Lab-on-chip devices are perfectly suited to analyse the presence of persistent and mobile chemicals: the very low volume of the devices allows a fast and sensitive detection with only a small volume of sample.

    • Environmental and human (bio)monitoring of persistent and mobile chemicals;

    ⇒ The small size of the lab-on-chip devices makes it portable and enables on-site analysis of chemical compounds. This is particularly adapted to continuous environmental and human monitoring, on the contrary to typical cumbersome lab analysis.

      • Gathering of toxicity and toxico-kinetic information (including animal-free approaches such as in vitro and in silico approaches) in order to allow characterising risks to human health and ecosystems, including at low environmental levels and combined/cumulative exposure;

      ⇒ Microfluidic organs-on-chip reproduce body barriers in a very accurate way and are perfect candidates to evaluate the toxicity of persistent and mobile chemicals on human health, while avoiding the use of animals. Microfluidics can also be used to recreate soil-on-chip and study the impact of chemicals on ecosystems.

      • Development and improvement of models to predict and assess long-term trends and risks for persistent mobile substances and propose preventive solutions.

      ⇒ Thanks to organ-on-chip and soil-on-chip devices, the relevance of the predictive models can be assessed, and the preventive solutions can be tested on suitable systems.
