Why automated sampling for continuous analysis?

Controlling the advancement of a reaction finely can be key for time-sensitive processes which evolve rapidly over time. Whether it is to better understand the cinematics of the reaction or to automatically switch it off when the target conditions are reached, being able to continuously monitor the progression of a reaction can often make it a success.

Elveflow proposes a setup that fits any type of process and allows the user to sample a small amount of liquid from a reactor to further transport it toward an analyzer and eventually collect it in an individual vial. 

The setup can be configured as per the user’s requirements, for example, to change the number of steps, the number of collection channels, the number of samples that can be collected, as well as any other change in the overall process. Our experts can help you define what is feasible based on your requirements, and suggest the best possible setup to reach your target.

AUTOMATED SAMPLING FOR CONTINUOUS ANALYSIS: THE SETUP

Hardware:

• OB1 flow controller DUAL with vacuum (-100 to -1000 mbar)
• Microfluidic bubble detector
• Mux Wire
• 3-way valve
• Rotative distribution valve (Mux Distributor)
• Reservoirs
• Kit starter pack Luer Lock with fittings and tubing 
• ESI control software (automated sequences possible)

What you should have from your end:

• Analytical system: Spectrometer or chromatography
• The sample to analyze

THE AUTOMATED SAMPLING: THE PRINCIPLE

The automated sampling at a desired time (tx) happens in the following steps: 

1. By applying negative pressure (vacuum), the liquid goes from the reactor to the liquid detector
2. When the liquid detector is reached by the liquid front the valve position is switched and positive pressure is applied
3. Due to the effect of positive pressure, the liquid then goes toward the analyzer of your choice, and later to the collection vial (if necessary). 
4. These steps can be repeated as many times as necessary to eventually get complete information on the evolution of the process over time. Samples can be collected in individual vials for further analysis. 

This process is automated and repeated as much as required thanks to the sequences generator of Elveflow’s ESI control software.

NOTE: The sample volume can be easily adjusted by choosing the appropriate length and diameter of tubing between the liquid detector and the 3-way valve
