ELVESYS company history & its ELVEFLOW brand

ELVESYS has been founded in 2011 by microfluidic researchers, for microfluidic researchers. The performance of our microfluidic instruments has built up the ELVEFLOW’s brand reputation. To date, hundreds of laboratories are using our systems: we thank all and every single users challenging our teams and technologies, you feed ELVESYS acting so!

In addition, thanks to our fisrt community of users, our microfluidic instruments have been spread around the world in more and more laboratories, including academic laboratories, institutes, hospitals and company research & development departments.

This made our mission come true: to spread microfluidics for all by any manner!

We are now proud of serving the needs of great research projects, risky innovative startup projects as well as bringing microfluidic expertise to big players developing complex instruments.

Firstly, because we are microfluidics geeks.

Secondly, our goal is to boost research as much as we can. There are 2 main ways to do it: doing the research ourselves, and… helping others to conduct better research. To be the brain or to help the brain. We decided to focus on the second solution and to help all researchers achieve impressive research.

Today, we can achieve discoveries that would have been unthinkable for researchers at the time of Isaac Newton. Why, are we smarter today than Newton and Einstein? Probably not. However, researchers now have tools that Newton and his contemporaries didn’t. With outstanding scientific tools, researchers can make outstanding discoveries. If we look carefully, most Nobel laureates were clever people, with wonderful intuition, but they also benefited from the latest scientific instruments of their time to transcend the state-of-the-art in their fields.

That’s what we do. We try to wake up the potential Nobel laureate in each researcher by giving them the right tools.

Why microfluidic instruments?

Again, because we love microfluidics ever since the start of Elveflow company history, and being passionate always makes it easier to do a great job. We also deeply believe that microfluidics is one of the backbones of the ongoing biotech technological revolution, and in a more general sense, of the current NBIC revolution based on nanotechnology, biotechnology, information science and cognitive science. We think that microfluidics is a mature enough technology that can be used as a tool for many research topics and fields, for an outstanding impact on healthy human lifespan, medicine, depollution technologies, and so much more… Now is the time to help every researcher in the world boost their research in those fields with our instruments, to increase the impact of their work.

What is our philosophy?

We don’t see people buying our instruments as customers, but as potential partners. We want to create long-term relationships with those who get in touch with us. It usually starts with you buying an instrument from us, which is great – we love it when people love our instruments. Then, some years later, you might believe in us deeply enough to start a joint research project together!
This philosophy has some implications:

NO POINTLESS SALE
We are here to help researchers get outstanding results, and we are now strong enough to not only focus on getting profitable. The first rule of our sales team is: NO BS! We will always try our best to recommend you the most adequate setup for your experiment. If the instruments you have in mind might not perfectly do, we will tell you.

WE OFFER SCIENTIFIC ADVICE
We are a team of driven scientists, more than 50% of our Elveflow staff hold a PhD, even our salespeople are all engineers or PhDs. We are passionate about microfluidics and we can help you, so if you have any technical or scientific question, feel free to ask us.

WE PUBLISH FREE ONLINE REVIEWS INSTEAD OF ADVERTISING
Rather than advertising, we find it more meaningful to provide you with free microfluidic tutorials and reviews, to help newcomers in the field become more familiar with microfluidics.

WE WRITE JOINT RESEARCH PROJECTS GRANT APPLICATIONS WITH YOU
If you need an instrument that does not exist yet, or needs to be adapted to your specific experiment, we can develop it for you and fund the R&D by writing a grant with you on your project. We often become part of research consortiums to take care of custom microfluidic setups, to help you get the highest impact scientific results.

About Elveflow company history

ELVEFLOW is an innovative, self-funded company created by 3 microfluidic researchers who started to develop microfluidic instruments in 2011. ELVEFLOW aims to become a key research partner for every researcher who needs microfluidics, all over the world.
Thanks to researchers who believed in us (and now we’re at it, thanks again!), it only took 4 years for our brand ELVEFLOW to become the world leader of high performance microfluidic flow control.

Our culture

Throughout Elveflow’s company history, we have always been driven by a single vision and a special culture. If you want to join our team you might interested by discovering who we are.

We are like wildlings: No bread and butter work here. We act! We think like generals and act like wildlings. We always seek to innovate in a way no one else would. Our vision and our passion drive us, as well as our clan and our mission.

We are like a tribe (of wildings): No single player either, we care about and for one another. Together, we are crossing an ocean to fulfill our mission – only sticking together will let us withstand the storms!

Our vision in one equation: Great researchers + great instruments = great discoveries. Microfluidics is one of the most important pillars of the ongoing biotech revolution, probably the biggest scientific revolution the humanity has ever faced. If we look at Nobel Prize winners and science history, it shows us that most of the greatest discoveries were made by great researchers using state of the art scientific instruments.

We didn’t expect such a fast growth and ELVEFLOW now provides systems worldwide to both academics and industrial leading groups: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, NASA, Google X, Facebook, Bayer, Philips, etc.

Aside from our microfluidic instrumentation activity, ELVEFLOW launched 10 sister microfluidic companies stemming from our research, in order to gather all microfluidic skills into one single company consortium: the Microfluidic Valley. The goal of this company consortium is to be able to fulfill all the needs of microfluidics researchers, which is crucial for us.

Totaling 45 employees and 25 researchers, 1,200m² of work space in the heart of Paris, ELVEFLOW has built up a team of highly qualified profiles with expertise in each and every field necessary to help researchers in their microfluidics research. Today, we work in collaboration with more than 60 research laboratories around Europe, mainly through H2020 research programs. This is quite an achievement – for us, it means that microfluidics researchers consider us to be the right partner to help them advance their research. That’s everything we wanted.

2008: Disrupting microfluidics
We were 3 young researchers from the ENS in Paris, passionate about microfluidics. We believed in the potential of microfluidics to change the world by revolutionizing the field of diagnosis.
We wanted to create a space where we could put innovation and human beings ahead of turning large profits. Where everyone could create their own microfluidics companies in order to help establish in France the foundations of what we call the “Microfluidic Valley”.

2011: A new microfluidic company
We lacked of a large network and investment funds, yet very quickly, we were lucky to see a number of people and institutions put their trust in us. And it is thanks to all that support that ELVESYS was created in March 2011.

2012–2013: The first steps of a microfluidic company
We were not expecting it, but in just a few years, we were able to become the world leader in microfluidic scientific instrumentation. Thanks to this achievement, we started funding new research projects that proved equally successful and in turn, allowed us to fund new and even bolder ventures. Admittedly, the first research projects that we launched saw the light of day thanks to the French government’s funding.

2014: The rise of Elveflow
In 2014, ELVEFLOW was already collaborating with more than 20 laboratories in the world on half a dozen of scientific projects. We developed in 2014 the quickest system in the world for the detection of pathogens as well as to develop a process to detect Ebola simulants in 7 minutes, 6 times faster than the best techniques currently available. This project allowed ELVESYS to win the Worldwide Innovation Competition in 2014 and many other innovation awards.

2015: A microfluidic company focused on collaborative research
Since 2015, we have been developing a demonstrator using microfluidic technology for the protection of our armed forces and civilians. Things have changed since 2011. In 2015 in the heart of Paris, ELVESYS had at its disposal its own research facilities of more than 300m² and an annual budget of more than 4 million euros to carry out scientific research.

2016–2017: A well-recognized research partner
Elvesys has delivered on its promise to become a major research partner in microfluidics: from half a dozen of ongoing research projects just a year before, we were involved in 12 international research projects.

2018–2020: Becoming the biggest microfluidic company in the world
In 2018 and 2019 we continued our extension. With extended facilities of 1,200m² dedicated to microfluidic and 45 people, we are now involved in more than 60 collaborative research projects in various fields such as organ on chip, advanced cell culture, lab automation and flow chemistry. We launched also several side initiative such as the microfluidic art project and a set of interviews of microfluidics researchers across the world to promote our field.
